Setting Preferences

MinkNote is designed to stay out of your way, but Preferences give you fine-grained control over how the app behaves and looks.

Projects

These settings control where your notes live and how to manage your project.

Current Project MinkNote works with any folder on your computer. A project is simply a folder containing your journals and notes. Switch between different projects to work with different collections of notes. Use the Copy button to copy the full project path, Switch Project… to select a different folder, or Open in Finder to view your project files.
Show Sample Notes This adds or removes the Getting Started sample journal in the current project. The default sandbox project includes it on first launch, but other projects start without it unless you turn it on.
Indexing If search or tags aren’t working correctly, you may need to rebuild the index. This does not change your files - it only rebuilds the internal search database.

These settings control file management and saving behaviour.

Automatically Save Notes When enabled, changes are saved as you type. If you prefer manual control, disable this option and use ⌘S to save.
Hide Frontmatter Hide the YAML metadata block in the editor when you do not need to inspect or edit note metadata directly.
Hide Image Attachment Folders Images are stored alongside notes in folders named i, a convention used by many Markdown editors. These folders are hidden by default but can be shown if you want full visibility of the file structure.
Default File Extension Choose the file extension used for new notes. The default is .md, but .txt and .markdown are also supported.

These options let you customise how notes and the editor are displayed.

Appearance Choose between System, Light, or Dark mode for the app’s appearance.
Default Text Size Adjust the default editor text size. The middle of the slider is Actual Size.
Reduce Motion Reduce interface motion and animation if you prefer a calmer experience or are sensitive to movement.
Automatically Format Links When enabled, pasted URLs are automatically converted into Markdown links.
Show Counts in Sidebar Displays the number of notes in each journal, folder, and tag. Disable this if you prefer a cleaner sidebar.
Note List Title Choose what appears in the note list: the note title, the filename, or neither. Following Semantic HTML conventions, each note should ideally contain a single top-level heading (H1) that describes its main purpose.
Editor Side-by-Side Layout Choose how the markdown editor is displayed: Single View or Side-by-Side. Side-by-Side mode shows Markdown and rendered content simultaneously.

Most settings can be changed at any time and take effect immediately, so feel free to experiment and tailor MinkNote to your workflow.
